The Legislator of Thane’s Kalwa and Mumbra Constituency, Nationalist Congress Party’s Jitendra Awhad, appears to have dispensed “justice” to a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly molested by a 22-year-old man.

Awhad reportedly summoned the girl and the man to his office in Naupada on Monday evening and ordered the girl to hit him. The incident was captured on camera.

The minor, a resident of Laxmi Nagar area, had approached Awhad’s office asking for help. Having heard her complaint, Awhad reportedly called the man to his office. Here, the slapped him repeatedly, after which the man was handed over to the Naupada police station and a complaint of molestation lodged. The man was booked under Section 354(a)(b) and 506 of the IPC and Section 12 of the POCSO Act 2012.

The video showing the girl slapping the boy went viral with NCP party workers uploading it on social media.

Asked about the incident and about taking the law in his hand, Awhad said, “The boy was harassing the girl for two months, she was mentally disturbed, traumatised and suicidal. The boy had molested her in a public place… I didn’t take the law in my hand, I did not thrash the boy. It was the girl who was molested by him. She hit him in anger as she had been harassed for so many days.”

Awhad added that the man had visited his office on Monday with his friends and had allegedly tried to beat up the victim’s friends. “When I heard that from my party workers, I reached office. This is when the incident took place,” he added.

According to the police complaint filed by the girl, a Class XII student, the man was forcing her to be in a relationship with him and upon her refusal, had begun harassing her about a month ago.“I was scared and traumatised that I was not even able to tell anyone. He hit me twice when I resisted his advances. He threatened me that if I told my parents, he would also beat my father,” the girl told The Indian Express.
