A 26-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Navghar last week. The girl’s body had been dumped near a container truck on the Eastern Express Highway on Saturday night, where it was discovered hours later by her parents. The police identified the accused as Nashik native Sahil Choudhary, who works as a container truck driver.

On Saturday evening, the 11-year-old girl, who had recently moved to the area with her parents, had been sent to a shop by her father to make some purchases. When she did not return after more than an hour, the parents began to search the area, and found her lying near a container truck at 10.45 pm, the police said.

They rushed her to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. A postmortem later concluded that the girl had been sexually assaulted before being strangulated, the police said.

An officer from the Navghar police station said that investigations focused on tracing the owner of the container truck. After receiving details of the vehicle’s registration and scanning CCTV cameras in the Navghar area, the police picked up Choudhary.

“The accused took advantage of the fact that the victim was walking alone in the dark and attacked her. He choked her when she fought back and fled,” the officer said. Mumbai Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Dudhe said that Choudhary has been remanded in police custody until September 28.
