A YOUNG police constable was hospitalized in Thane Thursday night after he allegedly shot himself with a self-loading rifle. The police are investigating whether it was a suicide attempt.

According to police, constable Sagar Maluskar, who is posted at the Thane Police Control Room, shot himself in the shoulder with the rifle at 11.45 pm. He was at the police ground, close to headquarters, at the time of the incident. “He is not seriously injured but has lost a lot of blood. He is unconscious,” said a police spokesperson.

Maluskar, who joined the police force in 2014, was admitted to Jupiter Hospital and is under observation. “We are waiting for the constable to regain consciousness so we we can record his statement. We will then know whether he was injured in an attempt to commit suicide or if there is another reason for his injury,” the spokesperson added.
