Man held at Mumbai airport for smuggling gold

According to Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials, accused Harjinder Singh Chhabra, who holds an Indian passport, arrived from Dubai Tuesday night.

An 83-year-old man was intercepted at the Mumbai International Airport while trying to smuggle gold bars worth Rs 16.69 lakh.

According to Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials, accused Harjinder Singh Chhabra, who holds an Indian passport, arrived from Dubai Tuesday night. He drew the suspicion of AIU officials who followed him and found him entering the toilet cabin of the immigration counters washroom, an official said. Reaching there, officials discovered that gold had been concealed in a tissue box. On checking, they recovered gold bars weighing 676 gm worth Rs 19,69,457. “We believe that he realised our officials suspected him so tried to dump the gold bars in the toilet,” said an official.
