A 32-year-old man was arrested in Govandi for allegedly raping his minor daughter repeatedly over a period of three months. The incident came to light when the girl escaped to her grandmother’s home last week. According to the police, the teenager had lost her mother earlier this year.

She had been living with her father in Govandi, said the police, adding the father who was not permanently employed did odd jobs in the area.

“After his wife passed away, the man used to repeatedly rape his daughter and threaten her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the abuse,” said an officer at Shivaji Nagar police station. Last week, the girl ran away to her grandmother who lives nearby.

“When the accused did not find his daughter at home, he registered a missing person’s complaint. Since she was a minor, we investigated it as a case of kidnapping,” added the officer.

The police eventually traced the girl to her grandmother’s house. “When we asked her why she had run away, she told us about the sexual assault. Based on her complaint, we arrested her father,” said police.

The father has been booked for rape and criminal intimidation and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
