VIRAR police on Saturday arrested the boyfriend of a 19-year-old girl, an engineering student, who was allegedly murdered by a friend of her boyfriend in Virar. The police had on Friday arrested Deepak Wagri, who allegedly murdered the 19-year-old at his residence after she rebuffed his sexual advances.

The police said since the victim came to Wagri’s residence at the behest of her boyfriend Sohail Shaikh, he too has been arrested for calling her there. Based on the post-mortem report of the victim which stated that there had been an attempt to rape on the part of Wagri, the police have also slapped rape charges against the accused in addition to the murder charge made out on Friday.

As per police, the couple were in a relationship for the last year and a half, and reportedly often met at Wagri’s house when the flat was empty. Wagri, a vegetable vendor, would allow the couple to use the flat when he, along with his family that comprised his wife and two children, would be away from the flat.

On Friday, when the murder took place, the victim arrived at Wagri’s residence at 10.30 am and was waiting for Shaikh. In the meantime, Wagri, who was alone at the house, made sexual advances at her. When she rebuffed the advances, Wagri, in a fit of rage, took an axe and stabbed her 13 times, as per Younus Shaikh, inspector, Virar police station. When the police team reached Wagri’s residence, the axe was still lodged in Aishwarya’s stomach.

As per police, Wagri attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped at the door by Shaikh, who reached the house by then. Shaikh called out to neighbours upon seeing Wagri covered in blood. A team from Virar police station reached the spot and arrested Wagri on the charge of murder. While Wagri was produced before the court that remanded him in police custody till September 9, the Virar police also arrested Shaikh.

Palghar police Public Relations Officer (PRO) Shivshanker More said, “We have arrested Shaikh since he called Aishwarya to his friend’s house. We will be questioning him regarding the incident.” When asked if the police had established Shaikh’s complicity in the crime, More said, “So far, it has not been established that Shaikh had any part to play in the crime. However, since he called her to his friend’s place and the crime took place there, we have arrested him. We will be questioning him to find out if he had any inkling about what his friend had planned.”

An officer stated that they are also checking the mobile tower records of Shaikh to find what his exact location was on the day of the crime to verify the statement he has given to Virar police.
