Deonar abattoir gets Rs 1,000 crore from BMC for modernisation

After 45 years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation has finally decided to upgrade the Deonar abattoir and has allotted Rs 1,000 crore for the project.

AFTER 45 years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal corporation has finally decided to upgrade the Deonar abattoir and has allotted Rs 1,000 crore for the project.

Of Rs 1,000 crore, the facilities available will include a dispensary for municipal employees and buildings to accommodate officers. Also, a solar energy utilisation scheme and rainwater harvesting facilities, high-end machinery for loading and unloading of ramps for all types of animals will also be installed.

There will be special Bakrid sheds, spacious market sheds, offices and restrooms for all, rendering plant to dispose the waste, treatment plant to meet effluent disposal, fresh water pumping station and a slaughtering unit capable of handling 6,000 animals per shift (by halal method) and 300 per shift (by jhatka method). There will also be a chilling facility and mechanically operated overhead conveyors, said a BMC official.
