Seven months after a 30-year-old constable was found dead under “suspicious circumstances”, the Vasai police on Wednesday finally registered a case of murder and is set to probe his death.

In February, Vinod Pardhi, a constable attached with Vasai police station, was found dead in a creek in Vasai, following his suspension from the force. The police had till now been treating the death as suicide.

Pardhi had been suspended after a woman officer made a complaint against him, alleging he was harassing her.

Following Pardhi’s death, the Inspector General of the Konkan range had ordered an inquiry into the matter and asked the additional superintendent of Thane Rural police to probe the case.

The police has now filed a case of murder after forensic experts opined that Pardhi suffered an injury to his head.

“The forensic experts have opined that Pardhi suffered an injury to the head which led to his death. After the injury, Pardhi had fallen in the creek,” said an investigator.

“The accidental case that was registered has now been converted to a murder case after we received the final chemical analysis and medical reports,” said a spokesperson with the Palghar police.

Officials said that the police were also probing if there was any connection between his suspension and his murder.

Days after Pardhi was suspended in February, the constable had gone missing. Later, his body was recovered near the seashore in Panju area. No suicide note was recovered from Pardhi but the constable was believed to have been depressed because of his suspension.
