The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply Transport (BEST) will, in the next few months, introduce an online ticket booking system, which will allow passengers to purchase tickets before they even board the bus.
In the BEST committee meeting held on Friday, General Manager Jagadish Patil announced the plan to introduce the digital system of tickets within a month or two. “Commuters can book tickets or season tickets digitally, which solves change problems and lessens commuters woes,” he said. “Understanding today’s needs of going digital, the BEST has introduced this plan to solve the cash-change issue. This will also help us become eco-friendly and save paper,” Patil added.
Till now, BEST commuters would either have to pay cash or avail the system of electronic-wallet, which required some minimum top-up amount for booking.
With a digital system in place, commuters can make their ticket payments online by logging in details of the bus number and route.
Patil said commuters will only have to show the QR code availed through this system to the conductor once he or she gets up on the bus.
“Just like other online transactions, an M-ticket will be generated, the QR code of which will have to be communicated to the conductor after sitting inside the bus. The code will be read on the electronic ticket-issuing machine available with the conductor. The system can be used through a smartphone user as well,” Patil said.
The system overcomes the pre-requisite of cash required in electronic wallet. The BEST is also planning to introduce an app which will make location tracking of buses easier for commuters.
