THE Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has approved a proposal to rename 23-km Amar Shaheed Path — a dream project of former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee — after former President late A P J Abdul Kalam. An elevated outer bypass road, Amar Shaheed Path connects two National Highways — Kanpur Road (NH-25) with Faizabad Road (NH-28).
Lucknow mayor Dinesh Sharma had moved a proposal in this regard in the LMC House Saturday. It got support from all the members.
When contacted, Sharma, who is also the BJP national vice-president, told The Indian Express that the bypass was named as Amar Shaheed Path because a park in the memory of Kargil war martyrs was proposed to be developed near it. “But later a different park was developed at the site proposed for memorial park for martyrs. As LMC has already renamed another road (from Parivartan Chowk to Shaheed Smarak, as Amar Shaheed Sthal Gaman Marg) and dedicated it to martyrs, I proposed to rename Amar Shaheed Path after great personality and former President APJ Abdul Kalam sahab,” Sharma said.
He said that the road from Parivartan Chowk to Shaheed Smarak has been renamed as Amar Shaheed Sthal Gaman Marg as it is dotted with several memorials and parks dedicated to freedom fighters and war martyrs. There is also a Kargil Smriti Park.
Amar Shaheed Path is under the control of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Contacted, NHAI’s regional officer in UP, Khushwant Singh, said that he has come to know about the development through media and he will make any comment only after inquiring with the officials on next working day.
Sharma, however, said that Nagar Nigam Act-1959 empowers the LMC to change the name of any road or park that falls within its limits. “Amar Shaheed Path falls in Lucknow municipal area and only LMC can take decision on changing its name,” Sharma said, while warning that if NHAI officials objected to it, he will lodge complaint with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari against them for “violating rules and insulting Kalam”.
Sharma claimed that Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, too, had once expressed the desire to change the name of Amar Shaheed Path.
