Constable dies while chasing ‘cattle smugglers’

A 27-year-old police constable was killed and six policemen were injured when the jeep in which they were chasing suspected cattle smugglers was hit by the suspects’ truck at a toll booth early on Friday.

The incident was reported in Aurai area of Sant Ravi Das Nagar (Bhadohi) district. The police have registered a case and are trying to ascertain the identity of the assailants.

Bhadohi Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Dixit said: “The police team had information about some suspected cattle smugglers likely to pass National Highway No. 2 in Aurai area. Around 1.30 am,they spotted the vehicle and were about to begin inquiries,when the suspects drove away.”

Dixit added that the police team chased them and overtook the truck at some distance from the toll booth of Lala Nagar on the border of Aurai and Gopiganj police stations,which is around 8 km from the spot where the vehicle was first spotted.

“But the suspects did not stop at the toll booth,bulldozing their way through the barrier. When the team tried to intercept them,the truck hit their vehicle. Constable Ashok Kumar Yadav died on the spot,” said the SP.
