Agra: Woman set ablaze in hotel room; she blames boyfriend, he says ‘immolation’

Police were informed and the victim, who had suffered about 80 per cent burns, was rushed to the SN Medical College from where she was referred to Delhi.

A 20-year-old youth allegedly poured kerosene on a woman and set her ablaze inside a hotel room in Sadar police station area in Agra on Monday, police said. The 19-year-old victim, who suffered 80 per cent burn injuries, has been referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. The accused was arrested later in the evening.

According to police, Sandeep Singh, a resident of Etora locality, checked into a hotel in Madhu Nagar with the woman around 11 am Monday. They did not submit any ID proof before checking in. About an hour later, the hotel staff heard screams of the woman. They broke open the door to the room to find her enveloped in flames. While they were busy dousing the flames, Singh managed to escape by jumping from the window of the room situated on the first floor, the hotel staff told the police.

Police were informed and the victim, who had suffered about 80 per cent burns, was rushed to the SN Medical College from where she was referred to Delhi. The police sealed the hotel on charges that the staff allotted the room to the youth and the girl without seeking any ID.

Contacted, Circle Officer of Sadar area, Aseem Chaudhry said that woman’s parents were aware of her friendship with the boy. The woman in her statement claimed that she was asking the boy for marriage when he got angry and poured kerosene on her and set her on fire, he added.

“The boy was arrested in the evening. During interrogation he claimed that the woman had brought kerosene with her and immolated herself when he refused to marry her before he got selected in army for which he was preparing. His father too is an army man,” added Chaudhary.

Police claimed that caste was a hindrance for marriage as the boy belongs to Thakur community while the woman is a Dalit.
