Across the 26km long Siliguri Corridor, lies the vibrant multicultural Northeast, made up of several distinct cultures, ideologies, languages and cuisines. In an attempt to showcase the Northeast in its prismatic entirety, the Government of Meghalaya along with the sponsorship of the entire North East Council will be holding a day-long North Eastern Festival at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today. To be inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee, the festival will offer a glimpse into the region through the Northeast’s arts, crafts and of course, cuisine.
There will be musical performances by stellar bands such as Girish and The Chronicles. Imphal Talkies and Minute of Decay, Mizo folk artistes, among others, while several of the tribes from the regions will also offer traditional dance lessons to visitors, teaching them how to shake a leg in styles dating back centuries. Apart from an exhibition, aimed at promoting tourism in the region (filled as it is with deep forests, mountains and water features), there will also be a food festival, with representations from all eight states. Given, that this is the age of the selfie, visitors will also have the chance to don traditional ethnic wear from the various tribes of the region and pose for photographs.
