Getting a tattoo is not only a style statement but also a way to express your belief, thinking and the phase you are going through in life. As a tattoo enthusiastic myself, I did a bit of digging in the tattoo world. I came across few interesting facts about the existing tattoo culture in India.

In order to find out what the top trending tattoos are these days, I interviewed a well-known tattoo artist Tenzin who works at Hawk Tattoos located in Saket, New Delhi, India.

1. Sports Related Tattoos

Who gets it: Sport’s enthusiasts

Thanks to the craze of just-concluded FIFA World Cup, football fans got a chance to show their loyalty and support towards the sport and different nations by getting the flags, or sport icons inked on their bodies. It not only helps define their personality but also reflects their passion for sports.

The obvious reason why anyone would get religious tattoos inked is to express one’s religious beliefs in a creative way. Some people are highly funky and creative in representing their own religion and the final product looks magnificent.

4. Fashionable tribal design

Who gets it: Both men and women of any age.

Where: Varies on the sex

According to tattoo artist Tenzin, girls mostly like to get inked on their wrist, shoulder and ankle because these are the body parts that girls like to show off. Whereas, men get inked mostly on arms because of the fitness fever these days.

Tribal tattoos in the past used to have a lot of traditions and spiritual thinking behind them but these days it has simply become a fashion statement. Keeping that in mind, people prefer getting black ink on their skin simply because it stands out more and lasts for long compared to any other color.

Apart from getting their own family member’s names and portraits inked, girls these days have a soft spot for their pets as well. With the use of cute designs and quotes, they permanently ink the memories and love of their domestic pets.

“The reason why mostly girls get these type of tattoos done is because girls now a days have more tattoo craze compared to boys. They have a wide choice of places on their bodies, like shoulder back, lower back, ankle, wrist area and on nape area and etc. and girls love to show off their tattoos”, said Tenzin.

The teenagers these days have an on going trend of getting their own name tattooed on themselves as a way of showing how cool and trendy they are.

Tenzin, who has done about a thousand of these kind of tattoos said: “Most of my clients don’t think about there career or what profession they are going to get in future. Instead of thinking about what they want, they simply see a tattoo in a nice place and like it and then get it. Later on they would regret it and ask me to remove it or cover it up with some other design”.

10. Love and Couple Tattoos

Who gets it: Couples or people in love

Where: Mostly wrists or arms

These kinds of tattoos seem to be the most controversial ones. People don’t consider their age, background or even their future when they get such tattoos inked. Tenzin, our favorite tattoo artist had a lot to say about this one.

“Normally we don’t do tattoos on people aged below 18 years, but somehow their parents support them and permit them to get inked, so we go ahead and do tattoos on them. He/she is in love, blindly in love and gets inked his/her name and a month later he/she will break up and ask to get it removed or cover it up. These things happen a lot nowadays.”
