Ivanka Trump was in Japan recently where she spoke at the World Assembly for Women: WAW! 2017 conference in Tokyo. On the sidelines, she even met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for dinner after the speech. The advisor to POTUS said harassment of women in the workplace cannot be tolerated, amid growing attention to sexual harassment of women in Hollywood and other industries in the United States.

For the dinner at a restaurant hosted by the PM, the 36-year-old advisor to Trump donned a kimono-inspired dress and fashion police around the world has taken note of her sartorial choice. The beautiful silk dress was made in Italy by Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz.

The appealing pastel shade, Bellifolia silk with delicate coquelicotes or poppy floral print from her Fall 2017 collection was quite apt for the occasion. With a black obi belt, bow detail near the waist, it was a new take on the oriental style keeping the dainty floral motifs found in silk weaved kimonos intact.

With a long balloon sleeve, deep V-neckline and ruffle-details on the shoulder, it was a good twist to the traditional style. Although the ramp version of the dress was accompanied with a pale pink Lovari Silk Pants, Trump ditched the pants and wore the dress alone. Pairing it with suede black pumps, she left her hair in beachy waves and donned a light pink lipgloss to add oomph to her otherwise minimalist look.

Her kimono-inspired dress appeared to be a nod to the traditional Japanese clothing, and it seems she too is now entering the world of fashion diplomacy. Though Ortiz is no outsider to American fashion industry or the White House, she has been invited to the United Nations as a fashion ambassador to her native Colombia. It’s a good choice to wear a female designer for the occasion as she went to take part in a conference that discussed the need to empower woman. Earlier, attending the W20 conference focusing on women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship in Berlin, many wondered why she did not wear an ensemble by a woman designer.

Also, for the WAW! 2017 conference, she wore a candy pink jacket and skirt from Miu Miu, a sister concern of Prada from Milan. The smooth cady coat and A-line mini skirt with shimmering silver crystals and faux pearls button detail was, however, criticised for being too short for the occasion.

And before leaving the Asian country, she visited the Hibiya Park and Imperial Palace in black wool cape and pants. The embroidered cape from Russian designer Olga Vilshenko, with intricate floral motifs, resembled cherry blossoms that are symbolic to Japan.

Unlike her step-mother and FLOTUS Melania Trump, who has been in the limelight for wearing non-American designers, Ivanka has stuck to big American brands like Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta and Michael Kors – so it’s a welcome change. The FLOTUS has made a statement on numerous occasion with her outfits — be it wearing an immigrant, Reem Acra’s gown to a dinner at Washington’s Union Station on the eve of Trump’s inaugural concert or wearing a green dress to welcome Queen Rania of Jordan.
