Diwali is arguably the most popular festival celebrated across India, and for the Indian film industry, it’s like a meeting of the glamour of Bollywood stars in the complementary backdrop of opulent parties, celebratory fireworks and bright lights. ‘Tis the time when India’s tinseltown decks up like a bride itself, and lavish parties are thrown – an invitation to which is an honour indeed. One such affair is the annual Bachchan family Diwali party, where the industry’s crème de la crème is in attendance. This year, like all others, Amitabh Bachchan and wife Jaya along with Ae Dil Hai Mushkil star Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and husband Abhishek Bachchan played perfect hosts. No less than any red carpet event, for fashion buffs, such occasions are an opportunity to check out the latest in festive-wear fashion. Sure, we love to see our stars on the ramp in stunning lehengas and festive ensembles, but a peak into what they themselves wear make for a much more interesting insight.
This year, many of the stars seem to have opted for an array of white, beige and pale gold as the preferred colour palette, and we’re not complaining. In fact, what is of note is the emergence of the next generation of star kid fashionistas, who were looking absolutely on-point. But without much ado, let’s look at our top seven favourite ensembles from the grand evening.
AISHWARYA RAI BACHCHAN
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked resplendent in a heavily sequinned Manish Malhotra ensemble. The designer even Instagrammed a photo of himself with the actor from the bash. Although, we’re not quite sure about Malhotra’s own choice of attire. That multi-coloured chequered kurta with the black blazer and the red dhupatta was way too much for anyone to handle. As we said, Aishwarya set the tone with her choice of a beige lehenga-kurti, which was heavily embroidered. She wore a statement kundan necklace and chunky gold bangles to finish off the look. The pop of red on her lips brightened up the whole get-up, giving it that festive wow.
Katrina Kaif looked svelte in the beige sheer lace sari with embellishments. She too teamed the ensemble with kundan and gold jewellery with a little pearly droplet in the ears. With her wavy mane swept to one side and the simple make-up enhanced with a lovely pink lip-shade and blush highlighting those high cheekbones, Katrina looked lovely without going over the top.
Continuing the white-beige-gold tone of the evening, Vidya Balan looked lovely as ever in this Lucknawi chikan-inspired sari by Gaurang Shah. It’s amazing how the actor has always managed to make simplicity look oh-so-grand even at the most competitive of red carpets. There is something ethereal about a full-body chikan work, and this sari embodies it. She smartly paired the sari with a green, printed blouse for that pop of colour, and that statement neck-piece by Silver Streak Store turned heads.
If today’s stars are blazing the red carpets and party scenes with their impeccable sartorial choices, the next generation is blossoming into quite the fashionistas themselves, and in designer-wear no less. Take Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana, for instance. Her blue velvet Manish Malhotra gown with that scoop neckline choli were the talk of social media fashion space. She kept it simple with the make-up, letting her naturally gorgeous hair down, and let that beautiful lehenga do all the talking.
SARA ALI KHAN
Yet another star kid who is blossoming into quite a fashionista herself is Saif Ali Khan’s daughter Sara, who attended the Bachchan Diwali bash in a blue and silver lehenga by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. And look at that top! We love the boat neck with that ambi-like cut on the shoulder that shows just the right amount of skin, giving it a very chic look. We absolutely love the old-school gota-work on the outfit.
MALAIKA ARORA KHAN
Yet another vision in white, this veteran fashionista looked stunning in this Tarun Tahiliani lehenga. Malaika Arora Khan also turned up the jewellery game with those traditional blings from Johri By Amaze. The pop of deep red on those lips, pulled-back hair that celebrates the model-actor’s high cheekbones gave the whole ensemble the risque oomph it needs. Take a bow, stylist Maneka Harsinghani!
This newly-married actor-model has just been rocking it ever since her mid-year wedding. Wearing an old-favourite, Bipasha Basu looked very old-school lovely in this sheer black Sabyasachi sari.
