The Bidhannagar police have arrested a 40-year-old astrologer for allegedly trying to rape a class nine student who had visited him seeking a prediction of her exam results.
The 16-year-old girl, who was worried that she had fared badly in her exams, went to see the accused, Bharat Mondal, at his home in New Town area on Friday night without informing her family, said the police.
According to the victim, Mondal allegedly pretended to read her palm and told her that there was little chance that she would score high marks. He then said that if she participated in a ‘special puja’, she might get a good result. When she agreed, he said that the puja had to be performed in an empty room, and led her towards a room at the back of the house, said the victim’s complaint.
When the girl reached the room, she noticed that all lights had been switched off. Sensing trouble, she tried to get out, but the astrologer allegedly locked the room from inside and tried to sexually assault her.
On hearing her screams, locals broke into the house, beat up Mondal and handed him over to the police.
“He was arrested under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The accused was produced in court on Saturday and has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) of Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate Santosh Pandey.
