The police, which had on Thursday confirmed the arrest of Rajan Mullick, the alleged mastermind of the touts’ racket at SSKM Hospital, released him on Friday saying he had only been detained for interrogation.
Sources said Mullick, who used to work in the mortuary, often used his “political connections” to manage the allocation of beds. He was reportedly close to then co-chairman of Patients Welfare Association, Madan Mitra — former state minister.
Outside the CBI office on Friday, where he had come in connection with the Saradha scam case, Mitra said: “I have known Rajan since I was associated with Rogi Kalyan Samiti, but I never saw him doing such things. If he did so, police will do its work.”
“He is a recognised broker at the hospital. He used to make arrangements whenever a VIP patient was admitted,” an intern said. Sources added Mullick never directly dealt with patients but was paid a fixed rate of commission. “We have got some information from Rajan. Soon a doctor, accused of being involved in the tout racket, may be arrested,” a police officer said.
