A 48-year-old history sheeter, with as many as 21 murder cases lodged against him, was gunned down by unidentified men while he was coming out of a mosque after offering Eid prayers in Durgapur town of Burdwan district Tuesday. Sheikh Amin was hit multiple times and died at the spot. The assailants mangeed to flee from the spot taking advantage of the crowd of Eid revelers. The incident took place in front of Eidgah in Kailashpur under Laudoha police station area of the district. While the exact cause of the attack was yet to be ascertained, police suspect it to be revenge killing.
“Amin is an accused in the murder of another criminal Sheikh Selim and was out on bail in the case. We are investigating all the possible angles,” said L N Meena, Commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur Commissionerate. “Amin has 21 murder cases lodged against him,” a police official associated with the case said. Sources said that Amin reached the Eidgah around 7am and entered the mosque for offering prayers. As he came out around 8.30am, some unidentified men fired three to four bullets at him from close range killing him at the spot.
“The assailants had been following Amin and had also offered Eid prayers inside the mosque,” said a senior police officer. Hearing the gunshots, the people assembled at the Eidgah started running. Taking advantage of the situation, the assailants managed to flee.
According to police sources, on October 25, 2012, Sheikh Selim was killed by some unidentified miscreants near his house at Kailashpur in Madhaigunj under Laudoha police station. Selim too was killed while he was out on bail. Later Amin was booked as a prime suspect in the case. Sources said, Selim and Amin had an ongoing rivalry over controlling illegal coal mining activities in the Laudoha and Pandeveswar areas.
