Crackdown: Two more touts held at SSKM, total seven in a week

Continuing with its crackdown on touts, the Kolkata Police Tuesday arrested two more persons from SSKM Hospital for allegedly fleecing patients and their relatives by offering them beds in the wards in lieu of money. A team from Bhowanipore police station arrested Sheikh Suman, 26, of Murshidabad and Suman Patro, 28, from Sarsuna in Kolkata, while they were trying to broker a deal with the family members of a patient. The duo had been operating in the hospital premises for several years, police said.

“With this, we have arrested a seven such touts in the last seven days,” a police officer who is part of the team leading the crackdown said. The police drive had begun after two touts were arrested following a complaint filed by one Sibnath Chatterjee, a resident of Bakulbagan area, who had gone to SSKM hospital on September 5 with severe stomach pain but was denied a bed. The touts had approached him offered a bed for Rs 2,500.

Police officials said that during interrogation, the two accused gave details of several other people involved in such illegal operation. Officials said the drive will continue and more arrests are likely soon.
