Families against marriage, lovers end lives in ‘suicide pact’

The police said the two belonged to the same community, but their families were against their marriage.

A boy and a girl in Uttar Pradesh have allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison as their families were opposed to their marriage. The incident was reported from Mediyari village under Jethwara police station area of Pratapgarh district Saturday. The police said the two belonged to the same community, but their families were against their marriage.

According to the police, the incident came to light when passers-by noticed a youth and a girl lying unconscious on a cot in Mediyari village in the morning. The boy was identified as Ranjit Nirmal, 18, son of Prem Chandra, who works in a laundry in Mumbai. The girl was identified as Pooja, 17, daughter of Munna, who also works in Mumbai at a laundry. The girl belonged to Sarai Sujan village under Mandhata police station area.

The police and their families were informed about the incident. Pooja was found dead on the spot while Ranjit succumbed in the afternoon at Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital in Allahabad. The police have also recovered two small containers of poison from the spot.

Inspector (in-charge) Jethwara, Pushkar Pratap Singh said, “The two had consumed some poisonous substance. Investigations have revealed that they were in a relationship and wanted to marry, but their families were opposed to it.” Singh added that the parents may have opposed the match because the families were distantly related.
