Dr Tanveer Ahmed Khan, the Congress candidate for Rampur, has an advantage over his rivals about which the Election Commission can’t do anything. He has an identical twin brother,Dr Mahmood Ahmed Khan, who has been splitting with him the responsibilities of campaigning.

A radiologist and owner of Sewa Hospital in Rampur,Tanveer is pitted against the Samajwadi Party’s general secretary Azam Khan. Mahmood, the younger one,is a surgeon.

The brothers plan their day over their morning tea and depart from poll office often dressed alike. Both make it a point to visit different areas.

Says Tanveer: “We never conceal anything and identify ourselves, but there have been instances when people have mistaken us for each other. It has also happened that Mahmood has said something and the people reminded me when I visited the area.”

Mahmood says he is only helping out. “We are a close-knit family and everyone is involved in campaigning. At times, people are confused. But those who identify us also say that at least one brother has visited them.”

It’s Tanveer’s first attempt at the poll hustings. However, the Tanveer-Azam Khan tension goes beyond elections. His Sewa Hospital is opposite the SP’s district office and the rush of patients sometimes creates traffic problems which the party has often objected to.

Besides,Tanveer’s attempt to convert a local cinema hall into an extension of his nursing home was thwarted by SP supporters who moved court.

Despite Azam Khan being a political heavyweight,Tanveer is hopeful. “The people at Rampur are not going after any big name. They realise they have been cheated in the past.”
