Over 50 daily wage workers of Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department (PDD) today clashed with the police during a protest march demanding regularisation of their services.

Shouting anti-government slogans, the workers marched towards Raj Bhavan in the rally which was also joined by former Power Minister and Congress leader Babu Singh.

They demanded regularisation of daily wagers and casual labourers who were working for the PDD since the last 5-10 years,as well as release of full wages to them.

The police stopped the workers before they could reach Raj Bhavan, resulting in minor clashes. The workers then sat on dharna which disrupted traffic for half an hour.

PDD Association leaders had threatened to launch an agitation if the government did not concede to their demands by February 2.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also the Minister in-charge of power ministry in Jammu and Kashmir, had promised the workers in 2009 that their demand would be fulfilled by regularising them in phases.

Urging authorities to redress long pending legitimate grievances of PDD daily wagers,Singh expressed full support to the agitating workers.

There are over 6,000 daily wagers and casual labourers working for the power department in Jammu and Kashmir.
