Maoist attack in Jharkhand leaves five cops,including Pakur SP Balihar,dead

A Superintendent of Police (SP) and four other policemen were killed in an ambush by Maoists in the Kathikund forest area in Dumka district on Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports,Pakur SP Amarjit Balihar was returning from a meeting with DIG Priya Dubey in Dumka when his three-vehicle convoy was attacked by Maoists between 2:30-3 pm. The Maoists reportedly threw bombs and opened fire on the police vehicles.

At least two other policemen are reported to have been injured and are in critical condition at the Dumka Sadar Hospital.

The four other policemen who were killed have not been identified yet. While one was the driver,three are believed to have been the SP’s security guards.

The spot where the attack took place is about 55 kilometres from Dumka town. It took almost two hours for the first police team to reach the spot. Top officials including DGP Rajeev Kumar and Home Secretary N N Pandey have rushed to Pakur.

Balihar,a promotee IPS officer,was earlier Jharkhand Armed Police-II commandant,before then chief minister Shibu Soren picked him as his security officer in 2009-2010. Balihar took charge of Pakur district on May 17 this year.
