Many parts of the Kashmir Valley were covered with a layer of snow even as minimum temperature increased in the region bringing respite to residents,who faced nearly a month-long period of extreme chill.
Rains continued in the city here as the minimum night temperature rose from 0.7 degrees Celsius to 0.8 degrees above the freezing point,MeT officials said.
He said Srinagar recorded 1.7 mm rainfall and light snowfall overnight.
High altitude areas of the Valley,including the famous skiing resort of Gulmarg,have received fresh snowfall and are covered with a thick layer of snow.
Officials said Gulmarg resort,52 kms from summer capital Srinagar,received eight inches of snow.
Gulmarg,which is the star attraction for tourists visiting the Valley during winters,remained the only place in the Valley to continue to reel under severe cold and recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.0 degrees Celsius,a decrease of 1.1 degrees from yesterday.
Kashmir Valley has got a respite from the severe cold wave which had swept the region over the last nearly a month as the minimum temperature has recorded a considerable and drastic increase.
The Valley was reeling under intense cold since the start of ‘Chillai Kalan’,a forty-day period of extreme chilling weather,on December 21. Snowfall and rains also lashed parts of north and south Kashmir,the official said.
He said the south Kashmir gateway town of Qazigund received 8.8 mm rainfall and 0.2 centimeters of snow.
The north Kashmir frontier town of Kupwara,where minimum temperature was recorded at 0.2 degrees Celsius,received 14.4 mm rains and seven centimeters of snow.
The Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir received 6.8 mm rain and eight centimeters of snowfall,the official said. The weather department has forecast light to moderate rains and snowfall in parts of the valley in the 24 hours.
Meanwhile,the minimum temperature in Leh town of remote Ladakh region dropped from minus 6.0 degrees Celsius to 9.4 degrees Celsius,while in nearby Kargil town the night temperature was recorded at minus 7.0 degrees Celsius,the official said.
