Porbandar police have seized Rs 25 lakh cash — more than Rs 21 lakh in new Rs 2,000 banknotes — from a car at Mokar village in Ranavav taluka and detained a tile trader and the driver in this connection. A cashier at the Jamjodhpur branch of Jamnagar District Cooperative Bank, who was travelling with them, managed to escape as soon as police intercepted the car Thursday night.
Acting on a tip-off, police managed to intercept the car near Mokar village at around 10 pm Thursday. While cashier Rock Patel managed to run away, police detained driver Virendra Dharani and ceramic tile trader Mayur Makadiya.
Dharani and Makadiya claimed that the cash belonged to Patel, who was supposed to get a commission upon its delivery to Bipin Chandarana and Chetan Chandarana, police said.
On questioning, Bipin and Chetan claimed that they had to hand over the cash to a third party for commission, police said. Income Tax Department has been asked to further probe the matter, police said.
