After being the first off the block to formally begin campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls,actor-politician Vijayakanth released the first list of candidates on Thursday, while the Congress is making last ditch efforts to rope DMDK into its alliance.
The party has announced nine candidates for constituencies including Virudhunagar Kanyakumari and Namakkal. Vijayakanth will formally begin his election campaign later in the day at Kanyakumari.
Vijayakanth had shown keenness in aligning with the Congress at the national front, and the latter was close to garnering DMDK’s support for its front led by DMK,after a series of discussions in Chennai as well as in Delhi.
However,Vijayakanth announced last Sunday during the token launch of the campaign that his alliance was only with the public and god – a line he had used earlier to emphasize his decision to contest alone in times of coalition politics.
Political observers say that the support that he was able to garner during the Assembly elections and the subsequent local body polls was due to his positioning as a ‘third choice’.
With the PMK deciding to join the AIADMK-led front,DMDK’s reluctance will make it difficult for the DMK and Congress. In the Assembly elections held three years ago, though it was able to secure only one seat, the DMDK garnered significant number of votes, enough to jeopardise the chances of AIADMK candidates in many Assembly constituencies.
The 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the one in Puducherry will go for polls on May 13,in the last phase of the general elections.
