Holding that the US was free to interact with Modi, Khurshid, however, said “there are lot of things that they will not and we should not put behind.”

Ahead of US envoy Nancy Powell’s meeting with Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday hoped America will apply with regard to the Gujarat Chief Minister the standards consistent with its policies in dealing with issues like human rights.

Holding that the US was free to interact with Modi, Khurshid, however, said “there are lot of things that they will not and we should not put behind.”

Khurshid hoped Americans, Europeans and other countries would apply standards consistent with their policies in dealing with issues of human rights.

He said that in the past, India was lectured by a number of countries on human rights and it would be interesting to “know what Powell tells Modi.”

“He is not the example that should be seen as an Indian. We are a country that believes in Gandhian way of life, compassion, service without recognition and none of these terms applies to Modi,” he said.

Meanwhile, External Affairs spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said it was normal for foreign embassies to make a request for facilitating meetings with “constitutionally-elected functionaries” of India.

“The request was made quite sometime back and the MEA said they could proceed with the meeting with the constitutionally-elected functionary. It is a normal courtesy extended to all the heads of missions,” he said.

Asked how he saw the upcoming meeting, the spokesman said “we consider the meeting between the Ambassador of a country, which has friendly relations with India, and a constitutionally-elected functionary of a state,” he said.

Signalling an end to nine years of boycott of Modi in the aftermath of post-Godhra riots, Powell is meeting the Gujarat Chief Minister on Thursday in Gandhinagar.

Khurshid said “as far as any other country treating him or for that matter any other political party dealing with him, everything has to be done on merit.

Our FM is lecturing the Americans about following their own Human Rights policies !! The Americans will want to know from Kurshid whether his country follows any human rights policies- their own or any other & whether they have any of their own? We saw from the recent Devyani episode what human rights guarantees and protections we have for Indians from lower socio-economic strata. None whatsoever. With what face does Kurshid lecture the Americans?

Talking about merit, Mr Kurshid, the right place for you and your congress party is the garbage bin - which the people will hand you in the next elections.

You have no control or can say no to elected person meeting with any countries ambador, otherwise your party president will not be able to see foreigners at all by that rule after 2014 election.

America's policy is to deny recognition or visa to those politicians who have been DIRECTLY involve in actions which are against religious freedom. India's highest court has given clean cheat to Modiji. Also Sonia's and hi clan's congress was accused of 1984 Sikh macre. Wake up Khurshid. You are disgraced your g pa Mr. Zakir Hussain, our 3rd President and his memorial trust. We still remember you were an advocate for SIMI, a terrorist organization. So Shut up!!!

Mr. Salman Khurshid has forgotten that he is foreign minister of India, not of a specific interest group! If Indian Courts (including the supreme court) has found nothing objectionable against Shri Narendra Modiji and have not found him guilty, it is mandatory on part of Mr Salman Khurshid to respect the verdict. But instead of showing respect to law of the land, he is instigating foreign powers not to forget the past.

This is shocking! Indian Foreign Minister saying negative things about an Indian Chief Minister and expecting world to continue the boycott of Shri Narendra Modiji ? Is this what Indians get for being a plural society ? Mr. Salman Khurshid has forgotten that he is foreign minister of India, not of a specific interest group!
