Dubbing as beginning of “imposition of Hindi”, the NDA Government’s reported directive to officials to give priority to the language in social media, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Thursday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should focus on economic growth and social development.

“Giving priority to Hindi will be construed as a first step towards attempt at creating differences among non-Hindi speaking people and making them second class citizens,” the 90-year old leader, whose party spearheaded the anti-Hindi agitation in the 1960s in the state, said in a statement here.

Reacting to media reports that officials of all Union ministries, departments, corporations, or banks, who have official accounts in social media, should use Hindi, or both Hindi and English but give priority to Hindi, Karunanidhi questioned why Hindi should be given priority over other languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of Constitution.

Recalling decades-long history of opposing Hindi impostion and his party’s role in it, Karunanidhi said at a time when the aspirations of a diverse section of people needs to be addressed through constructive efforts, showing interest in a language for communication would become diversionary.

“It is the desire and appeal of all well wishers of the nation that Prime Minister Modi should focus on accelerating economic growth and social development.”

when stay in Karnataka you must learn Kannada, it is humane. You want water, air, other facilities, but do not want to learn Kannada. What a logic. Kannadigas are very generous. people are misusing this quality. many Tamilians are living here , but they are not learning kannada, even in case of Hindi people also. it is a crime.

How hindi unites you. The only gain of learning hindi is you can watch Bollywood films. Non-tamils don't prefer to come to Tamil Nadu so locals grab the job. By accepting Hindi, you see the pathetic state of Bangalore where all get jobs except kannadigas. Even the north indians who come and settle in Bangalore don't learn kannada. It is we south Indians want to learn kannada just b'coz to respect other's language. If Hindi people don't want to learn kannada in spite of staying in Karnataka why a different rule for non-Hindi people.

This is the tactic which congress also followed. They hike the rail fare and simultaneously start another issue to divide the people's mind. So that the people forget about their livelihood issue.

When non-hindi speaking potion is the majority (60%), why you need to learn hindi. Do you learn Tamil , Malayalam, Telugu when you visit other states. Why you force others to learn something which doesn't guarantee bread and butter. We learn English b'coz it is livelihood not b'coz it is forced.

Old man, being decimated in TN with not a single Parliamentary seat and deserted by own family members look for ways to get back to limelight. Years back anti-Hindi plank came handy. Recently though Tamil movies have started to use Hindi in big way, and for Tamils movie being the barometer as there weren't protest of any sort for Hindi usage unnecessarily Karunanidhi make a vain attempt to rake up a controversy.
