MDMK general secretary Vaiko Wednesday appeared before the special tribunal constituted to look into the ban on the LTTE.

The tribunal, headed by Delhi High Court judge Justice G P Mittal, had in July issued an advertisement calling for a response from the LTTE and other persons to review the ban on the organisation.

Vaiko has been allowed to present his arguments in the matter, but his impleadment application, which would have allowed him to present evidence and cross-examine the evidence put forward by the government, was dismissed.

The tribunal will now examine evidence by the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government before giving its opinion on whether a five-year ban under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act is correct.
