PM-DESIGNATE Narendra Modi Friday held a meeting with party president Rajnath Singh, former party chief Nitin Gadkari and senior leader Arun Jaitley at Gujarat Bhawan.

The meeting that began late in the afternoon continued till late in the evening. The top BJP leaders are learnt to have discussed the issue of shortlisting names for the Council of Ministers. Ahead of the announcement of results, they had met in Gandhinagar also to discuss government formation and how to accommodate alliance partners.

Earlier on Friday, VHP’s Ashok Singhal and RSS leader Ram Madhav called on the BJP president separately at his residence. Others who called on the party president included Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Badal and MDMK’s Vaiko.

Several senior party leaders like Kalraj Mishra, Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Satyanarayan Jatiya also called on Rajnath Singh. New entrants to the party Jagdambika Pal and Ram Kripal Yadav also called on the BJP president.

While sources said the meetings of individual leaders with Rajnath were in the nature of courtesy call and sought by the individual leaders themselves, it is the meeting between Modi, Singh, Gadkari and Jaitley that holds significance.

Party leaders suggest that broader issues regarding the shape and size of the Union Cabinet as well as the issue of Rajnath Singh joining the government or the positions for party elders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi are likely to have been discussed in the meeting at Gujarat Bhawan.

Whether Singh should join the government or continue to head the party remains an issue that Modi and Singh need to decide in consultation with the RSS, party sources said.
In case Singh moves to the government, these leaders need to finalise the next choice of party president right away as the party works on the principle of one man, one post principle.
