The Election Commission (EC) has refused to recognise either of the two warring factions in Apna Dal, led by Mirzapur MP Anupriya Patel and her mother Krishna Patel, and also refused to identify either of the leaders as the president of the party.

In a letter to the party, Pramod Kumar Sharma, EC under-secretary, said the factions should solve the rift “amicably as per the party constitution” or through the “appropriate court.” “As long as the matter is unresolved, the commission will not grant recognition to either group,” he said. The rift surfaced in October when Anupriya questioned her mother’s decision to elevate Anupriya’s elder sister Pallavi Patel as party vice-president, and claimed that the decision is illegal and arbitrary.
