A final call on whether the Centre can go ahead with the appointment of the next Army Chief is expected early next week with the Election Commission likely to discuss the matter threadbare at a meeting of the full Commission, which includes the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners.

However, sources indicated that there was a strong view in the Election Commission that the decision “should ideally be left to the next government” and the current government “should not rush through it”.

“A final decision on the matter could be taken by Monday or Tuesday,” a top source in the EC said.

The appointment to the top post in the Indian Army has kicked a controversy with the BJP already having expressed its opposition to the government’s move to the poll panel.

Current Army Chief Bikram Singh is set to retire on July 31 and the government is expected to name Lt Gen Dalbir Singh — the present Vice Chief of Army Staff and the senior-most Army officer after Gen Bikram Singh.
