Most people know KCR only for his politics. Today, as he took over as the first CM of Telangana, his daughter K Kavita revealed his other side.

“He is a doting grandfather to my children and my brother’s children. He pampers them and when I complain, he makes the excuse that he could not spend much time with my brother and me when we were growing up and is now making up. Whenever he goes to Delhi, he returns with loads of toys and gifts for each one. He does a lot of shopping in Delhi as he can move around easily, unlike here,” says Kavita, MP from Nizamabad.

KCR, 60, loves Delhi. “He says that for a politician, Delhi is the place to be. He likes the late mornings, mehman nawazi of the old-timers,’’ she says. “During his years as a Youth Congress leader, he was very close to Sanjay Gandhi and and that is when he got the hang of Delhi life. After Sanjay Gandhi’s death, he returned home,” she says.

For special occasions, and if it is not too hot, KCR loves to wear Jodhpuri bandhgalas. “Generally, he prefers the simple shirt and trousers of silk-khadi or cotton-khadi. For more than 35 years, he has been buying the cloth from the same shop —Bharat Khadi at Hyderguda. For as long as I can remember, he has not changed his tailor either. He has been wearing the same type of simple chappals, usually brought from the same Metro store. He is very, very loyal and sentimental about these things,’’ Kavita says.

KCR uses a Cross or Mont Blanc rollerball pen but for the past few years he has stopped keeping it in his pocket. An aide carries it for him.

KCR hasn’t put on or lost weight for years. “He is not a foodie but likes home-cooked biryani. He likes only one variety of fish and pickle. Though he doesn’t eat much, he takes great care that others around him at breakfast, lunch or dinner eat well. He will stay put until you have eaten,” she says.

“Things have drastically changed now. Earlier he used to have three or four personal security officers, now there are nearly 30. Now he has great responsibilities as CM of the new state and he is very conscious of that,” Kavita says. “He has the ability to work long hours. When he has to work on major issues, he wakes up early and till 8 am he prefers time in private, when he is not to be disturbed.”
