After Samajwadi Party leaders in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh Home Minister Ramsewak Paikra has now sought to belittle the offence of rape by claiming that such crimes are not committed with an intention.

“Koi jaan kar to ye ghatnayen karta nahi hain…. is tarah ki ghatnayen dhokhe se karte hain sab log. (No one commits these acts intentionally… they are caused by deception),” he told reporters in Raipur when asked about the high incidence of the offence in the state.

He, however, added that such incidents should be condemned and people must be educated in this regard.

Taking a strong exception to his remarks, Congress sought an apology from him. PCC president Bhupesh Baghel said, “It reflects the mindset of the ruling BJP towards these offences. None of the cases of rapes in the state are being probed properly.”

Paikra later clarified that his statement had been misunderstood.
