Stung by the CBI probe into the chit fund scam, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Friday blamed the BJP and the Congress for their attempts to “defame the BJD through various means even after facing repeated defeats in elections”.
Though Naveen has not so far directly blamed the BJP over the chit fund probe unlike Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in neighbouring West Bengal, the BJD is feeling the pressure of the focus of the CBI probe on its leaders. So far, the CBI has arrested BJD MP Ramchandra Hansda, Banki MLA Pravat Tripathy and former MLA Subarna Naik over their links with chit fund firms Nabadiganta and Artha Tatwa.
The CBI has also interrogated Saroj Sahoo, Naveen’s personal assistant, at his residence over his reported links with chit fund scam accused Subhankar Nayak.
“Our success is a cause of concern for these national parties and that is why they have launched a vilification campaign against the BJD. These parties have never been with the people of the state and would never fight for the interest of the state,” he said while addressing a function to mark the 17th Foundation Day of the party.
The BJD for the first time organised functions at all district headquarters to celebrate its foundation day. Naveen expressed confidence that the opposition plans would not succeed as the BJD has the trust and confidence of more than four crore people of the state.
He reiterated that Orissa continued to be a victim of Central apathy, adding, “There should be no political consideration while allocating funds to the states under the federal structure.”
