Punjab PCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa met Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on Thursday, apparently carrying a dossier against Capt Amarinder Singh who has been calling for his removal. After coming out of the meeting, Bajwa said on TV that they discussed various issues including strengthening of the Congress but added the half-hour meeting did not bring up Amarinder.
Sources close to Bajwa, however, said in Chandigarh that he went with clippings of Amarinder’s outbursts against him, besides an audio clip of CLP leader Sunil Jakhar who reportedly told Amarinder that he need not go to the high command in Delhi because he was a tall leader and that it was the high command who would come to meet him in Punjab.
A PCC office-bearer claimed Rahul has asked Bajwa to prepare for a rally by the latter on farmer issues in April, an indication that the Congress vice president is still behind him.
On Sunday, Amarinder hosted lunch for his team in Patiala and stole a march on the Bajwa-led PCC by announcing his own rally to take on Amit Shah’s on January 22. Shah has since called off his rally. The lunch guests included 35 of the 44 Congress MLAs, as well as 50 former MLAs and other leaders.
Bajwa’s team had been preparing the dossier since then, the sources said. The clippings he is said to have carried included some of reports quoting Amarinder as giving a clean chit to minister Bikram Singh Majithia against allegations of drug trafficking, and others quoting Jakhar as praising Majithia.
