On the final day of the winter session of Parliament, Lok Sabha passed The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill. Members of the parliament showed rare unity in allowing discussion on the Bill on the last day of the session which has witnessed constant disruptions in Parliament. The Bill was earlier passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot said that the Bill would empower the disabled in the country. “I assure the House that when the Bill is passed, we will do all we can to empower the disabled in our country,” he said while introducing the Bill in the House. Almost all the members congratulated the House for allowing the discussion on the Bill which broadens the definition of ‘disabled’ by including 21 conditions.

The session has been a near-washout with demonetisation causing disruptions on most days.
