More than 300 Dalits today embraced Buddhism in Ahmedabad and Vadodara on the occasion of Ashoka Vijaya Dashami, the day the ruler is said to have pledged non-violence and converted to the religion, coordinators of the programmes said.

Around 200 Dalits, fifty of them women, converted to Buddhism at a programme organised by the Gujarat Buddhist Academy here, said the organisation’s secretary Ramesh Banker. “Deeksha (initiation) was given by a Buddhist religious head from Kushinagar, the place where Lord Buddha gave up his body to attain Parinirvana,” Banker said.

At a function in Vadodara, over 100 Dalits converted to Buddhism. Pragna Ratna, a monk from Porbandar, gave them the Deeksha, said Madhusudan Rohit, coordinator of the event. “There wasn’t any particular organisation behind this program…over 100 persons converted voluntarily,” said Rohit, who is the zonal coordinator of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

“We chose Sankalp Bhoomi (in Vadodara) to organise the conversion as it was here that Babasaheb Ambedkar had, on September 23 a century ago, spent five hours before leaving the city and also his job as the Dewan of the royal Gaekwad family to launch his fight against untouchability,” Rohit said.

“Ashok Vijaya Dashmi is important for us as on this day Ambedkar embraced Buddhism with lakhs of people in Nagpur in 1956. Ambedkar chose Vijaya Dashmi as it was on this day that Emperor Ashok had converted to Buddhism,” he said.

Gujarat was made the laboratory of Hindutva. It seems the experiment has failed.

Sanadana Dharmam, or Hindu way of life shows inclusiveness, but unfortunately grossly misunderstood. Mahathma Gandhi worked very hard towards inclusiveness. When petty minded distraught nature's way if life, the poor will seek the one who embraces them. No one can blame any religion, but the people who mal-practice them.

Where did this concept of "varna" and "untouchables" come from? Bhagvad Gita Chapter 4: Verse 13, that begins with "Chathur varnyam mayasrushtam...." says: "four divisions of the human society were created by me". Can u deny the connection between this verse the treatment of dalits in the past present? What makes a Brahmin a Brahmin? If you say occupation, many Brahmins have no idea about Sanskrit or Vedas. R they not Brahmins? Can a dalit become a Brahmin? If yes, how? Where has it happened?

Hinduism is based on inequality i.e varnashrama. Hinduism is the root cause of atrocities on women and deprived weaker section of the society. It is one of the oldest inhuman tradition which is still continued in the modern world.

Typical ignorant raving about Hinduism by the leftist losers who don't know the ABC of Vedic philosophy or thought. If Hinduism is the root cause of atrocities against on women - why are Dalits more likely to abuse and assault women than Brahmins ? Why are more Dalits in jail for crimes than brahmins or Kshatriyas ? Why was malala chased out of her country for going to school but RSS on the other hand is educating Muslim girls in its schools ?? Ignorant bumpkins don't know the ABC of the greatest tradition in human history called Hinduism but want to bark about inhuman tradition? If hinduism didn't respect human life - then critics like you would be hiding behind police protection - just like the critics of Islam are hiding.

Recent example of BHU VC who says he belongs to RSS and his atrocities against girl studnets who demanding for safety is the one of example of your great religion. Banning ladies to take education isn't the core of Hinduism? Look at all brahmins like Asaram are behind bars for raping innocent minor girls and also women. Read Veda what it has said about and sacrificing animals including cow. Still killing people who eats beef. The problems is within Hinduism so why so you people divert attention to Islam. Aren't reporters and social workers are killed by saffron terrorist?

President is a SC pappu so that he offers legitimacy and helps BJP target SC votes. But on the other hand, 6 out of 7 RSS sarsanghchalaks have been brahmin. And the 7th one was an upper caste Rajput. When the popuation of brahmins is 5 percent, how can 85 percent of RSS sarsanghalaks can be brahmins.

Who is stopping them from converting ? Hindus will give 4 fingers to Dalits by removing reservations ACROSS the nation and see how well these new "Buddhists" compete with Hindus. Go ahead convert - but dont' come crying for reservations then if you are so great.
