The members of the teachers’ union Teachers’ Democratic Front (TDF) are up in their arms to unearth what they call as “racket of fake teachers”. These teachers have now approached the School Education Minister Rajendra Darda with a list of schools, which they allege have appointed teachers with bogus degree certificates.

The organisation claims that they have submitted a list of 50 teachers from different city schools who allegedly have fake degree certificates.

Tired of running from pillar to post, the teachers are now planning to appeal to the Chief Minister to look into the matter. President of TDF Janardan Jangle said: “We had submitted a list of names, along with evidence,to the Education Department but no action has been taken. Hence we have sought help from the state government now. We will also be submitting the same letter and list to the CM on the Teacher’s Day.”

According to TDF,the Education Department has failed to take action against such teachers or even verify their degrees. In January last year, around five teachers of two reputed schools in the western suburbs were found to have alleged bogus degrees. This included three teachers from Swami Vivekananda English High School in Jogeshwari, and two from Jawahar Hindi Vidyalaya in Goregaon.

These teachers claimed to have completed their BA and B Ed from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University at Varanasi and managed to work as assistant teachers for over 17 years in the respective schools.

Even this year TDF has submitted the names of five different teachers with bogus degree working in five reputed schools located in Malad,Kandivali and Andheri for over two decades now. These teachers too claim to have completed their BA and B Ed from Sampurnanand Sanskrit University.

Following complaints from TDF last year, the Education Department re-verified the certificates and degrees of these teachers and suspended them after cancelling their approval.

However, according to TDF,not a single case has been sent for verification by education department this year. As per the list provided by the organisation, most of these teachers are in schools located in western suburbs. “These unqualified teachers have been working in these schools for many years while those who worked hard for their degrees are unemployed. There are many who have managed to get a job on the basis of such fake degree certificates,” said Jangle.

He added,“The matter came to light when some of our members went to the university to get the certificates verified. We managed to get the verification done, however there is no follow up from the education department. We suspect that some officers in the Education Department are also involved in this case as they are trying to cover up the matter. “

Meanwhile,Education Inspector of Western zone P R Pawar said,“We are treating the matter very seriously. Last year as soon as we got all the proofs against the culprits we immediately cancelled their approval and asked the school to suspend them. We had found their certificates bogus during verification. We also issue showcause notices to the school managements who employ these teachers. However,we cannot take action against anybody without any proof. The verification process takes time.”

However,TDF claims that no punitive action is being taken against such teachers and many of them still continue to work in the same schools.
