NASHIK: A prisoner,serving life term in the Central jail,gave the police a slip and escaped while being taken to a hospital,jail officials said on Thursday.
Satej Mahipal Walmiki,hailing from Mumbai,was sentenced to life in a murder case in 2000. While he was being taken to civil hospital on Wednesday for treatment,he jumped off the police van near the Nagaji Hospital Square and fled by hitching a ride on a motorcycle,police said. His escape appeared to be pre-planned,police said.
Orphanage rape: Deaf,mute minor narrates horror
THANE: The sessions court has been hearing a second key witness in the Kalyani Mahila Bal Seva Sanstha rape case since Monday. A deaf and mute minor,who stayed at the orphanage in Panvel for years before she was rescued in 2011,is using sign language to tell the court her horrifying tale. The hearing is otherwise in-camera,but the court has allowed an interpreter and a counsellor.
Farmer ends life in Nashik
Nashik: A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide in Dahivad village of Devla taluka here,police said on Thursday. Walmik Kashinath Beldar (59) consumed poison on Wednesday,police said,adding that he succumbed on way to the hospital. He was under stress due to the loan he had taken,police added.
