Shiv Sena has urged all Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members from Maharashtra to deliver speeches and ask questions in parliament in Marathi on February 27,Marathi Bhasha Din.
Every year,Marathi Language Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of poet V V Shirwadkar alias Kusumagraj.
On the initiative of Rajya Sabha member Bharatkumar Raut,Sena has written to all 48 Lok Sabha members from the state to conduct business in Marathi on February 27. Apart from Sena, the members belong to Congress,NCP,BJP and other parties.
Raut has also written to the 25 Rajya Sabha members representing the state, including nominated ones,to display Marathi pride.
His one-page letter reads,On February 27,all members of parliament representing Maharashtra should observe Marathi Bhasha Din. Even a symbolic gesture would be great.
Raut said: As per norms, members can give 24 hours notice suggesting language preference. It is mandatory for the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats to make provision for translations in English or Hindu.
The Mumbai MP recalled how Sena chief the late Bal Thackeray would always greet people with a Jai Maharashtra.
Sena has also urged the state government to direct all its establishments to conduct administrative business in Marathi on the day.
However, officials in CMO said,Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan ensures he is politically correct when it comes to state affairs. Administrative matters are processed in Marathi. But he cannot force bureaucrats to speak Marathi.
Sena has periodically raised the Me Marathi plank to firm hold on sons of the soil. Now,it is also competing with MNS chief Raj Thackeray who is fiercely pushing the Marathi agenda.
