In a throwback to scenes of December last in the wake of gangrape of a girl in a moving bus, protesters clashed with the police when they tried to break the barricades and enter into the Delhi Police headquarters near the ITO in central Delhi, where the main roads were closed to traffic. People also staged demonstrations at various places in the national capital, including the residences of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde.

Demonstrations were also held at AIIMS where the girl is undergoing treatment and outside the Gandhi Nagar police station where policemen allegedly showed laxity in dealing with the case.

The protests started in the morning with a small crowd at police headquarters demanding stringent action against policemen, but as the day progressed,it grew to a few hundreds.

The protesters tried to enter the PHQ at regular intervals by breaking the barricades but a heavy posse of security personnel stationed there prevented them.

Activists of BJP,CPI(M),CPI,AAP,AISF,AIYF,SFI,ABVP and other organisations were part of the protest. There were protests at AIIMS also.

In the afternoon,a group of protesters marched to Shinde’s 2-Krishna Menon Marg residence demanding the sacking of Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar. They dispersed later after a memorandum in this regard was submitted to his office.

A group of people from Lok Raj Sangathan and Naya Daur Party also staged a protest outside Gandhi’s residence demanding the sacking of Shinde.

The condition of the five-year-old girl, who was raped allegedly by a 22-year-old man after holding her captive here, was stable today.

Doctors attending to the victim at the AIIMS said the girl’s condition was stable. She was shifted to AIIMS last evening.

The girl was brutally raped and assaulted allegedly by her neighbour while being held captive and starved for two days. She also contracted infection from foreign objects inserted in her body.

Shocked and anguished at the sexual assault,President Pranab Mukherjee called for urgent introspection to identify causes behind repeated failure of society to ensure security of women and children. (With PTI inputs)
