Two Madhya Pradesh Ministers today visited village Gongol,40 km from here, and met the agitators who have embarked on ‘Jal Satyagraha’ demanding reduction in the height of dam at Indira Sagar Project on river Narmada.
The agitators, who want the height to be reduced from 262 metres to 260 metres, are standing in neck-deep water.
The agitation, under the aegis of Narmada Bachao Andolan, started fifteen days ago. NBA leader Chittaroopa Palit is also taking part in it.
Ministers Kailash Vijaywargia and Vijay Shah conveyed to them the appeal by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to end the Satyagraha, sources said.
But the agitators rejected the appeal.
Chouhan had directed Vijaywargiya and Shah to take a stock of the situation after reports of Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dam-affected people in Ghoghalgaon and Barkhalia in Khandwa district and Khardana in Harda district were staging the protest by standing in neck-deep water was noticed at the state and national level.
Besides the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission (MPHRC),two senior Left party leaders,CPI national secretary and MP D Raja and CPM Politburo member Brinda Karat have also expressed concern on the issue.
The protesters say that they had been demanding alternative land for their submerged land, proper rehabilitation and resettlement work since the past six months much before filling the dam reservoir to their capacity as directed by the Supreme Court.
Narmada Bacaho Andolan (NBA),which is agitating on the issue since the last decade, has alleged that the state government had given false affidavit in the apex court on the issue of completion of rehabilitation.
