“The UPA should first announce its nominee and a decision will be taken only after that,” she told reporters here.
NCP leader and former Lok Sabha Speaker P A Sangma, being backed by BJD and AIADMK for the President’s post, had on May 22 met CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat seeking the party’s support.
Earlier,Brinda Karat met Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda and pleaded for the release of arrested Mangalore University student Vittala Malekudiya/
“The Chief Minister has assured speedy invetigation and booking of officials if found guilty of falsely booking Vittala. CPI(M) will fight the case out till the end,” she said.
Vittala,a Mass Communication student, was arrested for alleged links to Maoists.
Stating that his arrest was against the spirit of democracy, harat said: “The government’s action is undemocratic. Vittala’s arrest is violation of the Forest Act.
Protesters among the tribal population, who are fighting for their livelihood, are being branded as insurgents. Handcuffing of Vittala by Mangalore police was a hineous act.”
