Cong loses key ally as PMK joins AIADMK front

The UPA lost a key ally in Tamil Nadu on Thursday after an overwhelming majority of PMK general council members voted in favour of allying with AIADMK for the LS polls. After days of wavering,the result of the voting was quite decisive – 2453 in favour of joining Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK against 117 supporting a DMK led front.

The UPA lost a key ally in Tamil Nadu on Thursday after an overwhelming majority of PMK general council members voted in favour of allying with AIADMK for the LS polls. Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) is a constituent of the ruling UPA at the Centre.

After days of wavering,the result of the voting was quite decisive – 2453 in favour of joining Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK against 117 supporting a DMK led front.

The decision was taken at a crucial meeting on Thursday. The meeting was attended by all senior leaders,including PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss and his son and Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani.

Speaking to the media after the meeting,Union Health Minister Dr Anbumani Ramadoss announced that he will resign from the cabinet in the next couple of days days.

Meanwhile,Vijayakanth confirmed that his was firm in its decision to go alone in the upcoming Lok Sabha election. The actor-politician Vijayakanth released the first list of candidates on Thursday,even as the Congress tried to make a last ditch efforts to rope DMDK into its alliance.
