Former Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Nirmal Yadav did not appear in the CBI Court today due to health reasons. The court was to frame charges against her and other accused in the cash-at-judge’s door scam.

The special CBI prosecutor expressed strong displeasure over her non-appearance in court today. The prosecutor said Yadav is acting as if she is above the law. The case has been deferred to August 27.

Justice Yadav was charge sheeted by the CBI for allegedly demanding and receiving an amount of Rs 15 lakh for deciding a judgment in favour of a client of lawyer Sanjiv Bansal,a co-accused in the case.

Other than Justice Yadav, charges have been framed against four others in the scam. A major controversy had erupted after Rs 15 lakh was delivered at the residence of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, another judge of the same High Court,in August 2008.

After she reported the matter to the Chandigarh Police,an inquiry was instituted and it was alleged that the money was meant for Yadav but was delivered to Kaur due to confusion over their names. Yadav,in her plea, had denied the allegation.
