SAYING as many as seven districts of Assam, most of them in the Upper Assam region, were infested by Maoists,Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to include these districts in the Integrated Action Plan so that the growth of Left-Wing extremists could be contained before it became a menace.

Gogoi, who submitted a memorandum to Singh here on Friday said there has been a growing trend of Maoists in the Upper Assam region “because of its strategic location”. Gogoi said Assam was infested with a plethora of insurgent groups and their continued presence had served as a common convergence point with ULFA,NSCN and the PLA of Manipur.

Pointing out that the 97 companies of central paramilitary forces were inadequate for tackling the menace,Gogoi asked Prime Minister Singh to consider deployment of at least 125 companies of forces in the state.

Meanwhile, even as the Prime Minister flew back to New Delhi after winding up his five-hour trip to Guwahati, security forces gunned down five militants belonging to the Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) in Arlong-basti village in Karbi Anglong district on Friday.
