Jayalalithaa death: She was passionately devoted to welfare of people, says former PM Manmohan Singh

The former chief minister was in hospital for 75 days where she was undergoing treatment.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh arrived at Rajaji Hall to pay his last tributes to former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa who passed away late Monday evening.

“I join millions of admirers of Jayalalithaji in mourning her sad and untimely demise”, Singh said, adding that she was a charismatic leader who will be remembered forever as the beloved Amma by the people of Tamil Nadu. “She was an outstanding leader who was passionately devoted to the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu,” Singh added.

The former chief minister was in hospital for 75 days where she was undergoing treatment. On Sunday, she suffered a cardiac arrest following which her condition deteriorated.

Her funeral will take place at 4.30 pm Tuesday next to the memorial of her mentor MGR, off Marina beach in Chennai. Top politicians cutting across political parties will attend the funeral of the leader.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Rajaji hall this afternoon to pay his respects. President Pranab Mukherjee is also scheduled to arrive there this afternoon.
