Jayalalithaa death: Both Houses of Parliament to pay respects, adjourn for the day

Both Houses of Parliament will adjourn for the day after paying respect to former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa. The Winter Session of Parliament is currently underway, and ends on December 16. Jayalalithaa, who had been hospitalised since September 22, passed away on Monday evening after she suffered a cardiac arrest. Hundreds of party workers gathered outside the Apollo Hospital in Chennai, mourning the death of their leader popularly known as ‘amma’.

Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK is the third largest party in Parliament after the BJP and the Indian National Congress. The AIADMK has 37 MPs in Lok Sabha and 13 MPs in Rajya Sabha. An hour past midnight, the AIADMK legislature party appointed O Panneerselvam as the chief minister. He was earlier given charge of all of Jayalalithaa’s ministries.

Her funeral will take place on Tuesday evening at 4.30 pm next to the memorial of MGR, off Marina beach in Chennai. Thousands are expected to attend the funeral. Earlier on Tuesday, her body was moved from her Poes Garden residence to Rajaji Hall where thousands of party supporters, residents and politicians across parties arrived to pay their tributes.
